“Musical of Musicals (the Musical!)”a Musical Farce of Broadway

Posted 2-22-2012

Upper Sandusky’s Star Theatre has hosted countless productions of classic musicals from some of the greatest composers in Broadway history for over thirty-five years.  Performances of classics such as Hello, Dolly!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Into The Woods, Oklahoma!, and The King and I, to name a few, have entertained and inspired audiences.  However, the next show will take those classic shows and turn them on their head!

Charles Groth directs this musical farce, as well as portrays the role of “Jitter”, the evil landlord.

“The thing that people need to know is that this is not your average review where you sing a bunch of songs from different shows.  This is all new material that spoofs each composer by taking stories and characters from their major shows and concentrating them down into four characters.  The basic story in all five sections is the same.  A girl has to pay the rent to the evil landlord, asks for advice from her matronly friend, and ultimately her hero boyfriend saves the day and pays the rent,” said Groth.

The show spoofs the Broadway composers Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Kander and Ebb.

“Because each composer has such a unique style and type of show they write, each time the story is presented, it is completely different.  Jokes reference song titles, plot lines, and even iconic performers.  The show even makes fun of the composers themselves, such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s reputation of stealing material and Jerry Herman’s pattern of putting in dance numbers while the star is off stage changing for the next scene.  Musical of Musicals the Musical is like one part the movie Airplane!, one part Friars’ Club Roast, and forty parts classic musical theatre,” explained Groth.

Production dates are Saturday, March 3rd 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 4th at 2 p.m. at the Star Theatre in Upper Sandusky.  Tickets go on sale in February and may be reserved by calling 419-294-1411.  For more information on this show and other upcoming productions, please visit www.starplayers.net .
