Star Players’ Award Winning Production
Featured at State Theater Festival
Posted August 15, 2012
The 2012-2013 season of the Star Players of Upper Sandusky has kicked off with a hugely successful production of the musical Titanic, but one show from the previous season is enjoying a second life.
This past March, the Star Players presented Musical of Musicals (the Musical!) by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart. An excerpt of this production was performed at the Central Region Ohio Community Theatre Association (OCTA) festival July 14th at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and was one of only two excerpts from the regional festival that were invited to perform at the State OCTA Festival over Labor Day Weekend.
The Ohio Community Theatre Association is a collection of community theaters throughout Ohio. The purpose of this statewide service organization is to promote excellence and creativity in live theatre by providing its members educational opportunities for growth in artistic and technical aspects of theatre, and to promote community awareness and understanding of, and access to, live theatre alone or in conjunction with other arts organizations, educational institutions and other theatre organizations. There are 111 total member theaters in the organization spread across 5 regions.
As part of membership, each theater is allowed to send an excerpt of one show performed from their previous season. Any section of the show may be excerpted, however the material must be continuous in the script and cannot exceed 45 minutes, including the time to set up and tear down the set. Each excerpt is then discussed by three separate responders, who give feedback on the performance. Following the conclusion of the final excerpt, the three responders confer and decide any awards to be presented in addition to deciding which excerpts will be invited to perform at the state conference.
At the conclusion of the festival, the excerpt received multiple awards. These awards include Merit In Costuming – Cast, Merit In Choreography - Amanda Sterling and Charles Groth, Merit In Musical Performance - Amanda Sterling, Excellence In Musical Performance - Mandy Bour, Excellence In Musical Performance - Eric Hertenstein, Excellence In Musical Performance - Nathan Haubert, Excellence In Musical Performance - Charles Groth, Excellence In Ensemble – Cast, and Excellence In Directing - Charles Groth.
The OCTA State Conference will be held from Friday, August 31st through Monday, September 3rd. The event will include top excerpts of shows from throughout the state , workshops, and other theater activities. The excerpt of Musical of Musicals (the Musical!) will be performed Saturday afternoon. The event takes place at the Doubletree Hotel at 175 Hutchinson Avenue, Columbus, OH.
